REHEARSALS HAVE BEGUN FOR "THE INCIDENT IN THE TOWN OF GOGA"

On 23 May, rehearsals began for the play canonical to Slovenian drama, „The Incident in the Town of Goga“ by Slavko Grum.

For the first time on a Bulgarian stage, at the "Ivan Radoev" Drama and Puppet Theatre, Slavko Grum’s play „The Incident in the Town of Goga“, which has become an emblem for Slovenia and was written in 1930, will be staged.

The translator of the play and consultant of the project is Prof. Dr Lyudmil Dimitrov, director – Stiliyan Petrov, set designer – Nikola Toromanov-Ficho, composer – Milen Kukosharov, dramaturg – Gergana Pirozova.

The actors of the Pleven theatre take part: Adrian Filipov, Borisa Sarafova-Cherkelova, Delyan Iliev, Elitsa Aneva, Ivan-Aleksandar Doychev, Maria Ilieva, Maria Yordanova, Milena Ermenkova, Marian Dulchev, Mariyan Stefanov, Nina Goranovski, Ovanes Torosyan, Sergey Konstantinov

This is a sacred text for Slovenian drama, a play that has travelled the world. It is universal, a play about this world, where we are heading, where we are spinning our wheels – Prof. Dr Lyudmil Dimitrov shares with the production team. The holder of many awards, Prof. Dr L. Dimitrov is the only official member of the International Chekhov Society, as well as of the International Dostoevsky Society, a lecturer from 2004 to 2019 in Bulgarian language, culture and literature at the University of Ljubljana, and a lecturer in Russian literature and culture at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski".

The play „The Incident in the Town of Goga“ by Slavko Grum was first translated into Bulgarian by Prof. Dr Lyudmil Dimitrov in 2021 and is one of the five Slovenian plays in the collection „The Dead Man Comes for His Beloved“. The occasion for the translation of this play was the creative meeting between Prof. Dr Lyudmil Dimitrov and director Stiliyan Petrov 15 years ago, of whom the translator says that he is the only director in Bulgaria to whom he would entrust this at once paradoxical and inspiring text.

Slavko Grum is one of the most significant playwrights of Slovenian theatre. Today the most prestigious theatre festival in Slovenia bears his name. He graduated in medicine in Vienna and was strongly influenced by the discoveries of S. Freud and psychoanalysis, as well as by the drama of A. Strindberg, M. Maeterlinck and the stage discoveries of director A. Tairov. The play is recognised as an emblem of Slovenian expressionist drama, but it also contains the discoveries of symbolism, post-symbolism and naturalism.

The creative tandem between dir. Stiliyan Petrov, set designer Nikola Toromanov-Ficho and composer Milen Kukosharov with the team of the Pleven theatre is a long-awaited meeting!

Good luck!
