PUPPET THEATRE WORKSHOP WITH OLGA CURCIC
25, 26 and 27 June, 10:30
Times change, and we change too, as people and as a society; technology is already part of our DNA, the world is full of new materials, new forms. Every object or material can become a means of expression. Artists from all over the world are in a feverish search for new ways of expression. We witness this phenomenon in every field of art.
But form remains form if the message is missing. And messages are always connected to the problems of the present.
If we analyse them, we will see that they too change: the lack of love, the complexity of communication between us, the sadness that inexplicably overtakes us, the anger we cannot control… all illnesses of our contemporary society.
Where, then, to begin?
Motivation in art is the main driving force; without it, art itself would not exist.
However long and rich one’s creative experience, however many performances from different cultures and countries we have seen, it always comes back to the same starting position: What do I want to say? How to say it, with what? But most importantly: WHY?
In puppet art one must necessarily answer the question: Why with a puppet (object, material)? And why with precisely this kind of puppet (object, material)?
In our contemporary world it is even harder to answer these questions, because as many-sided as our problems are, so endless are the means of expression. New forms and the interaction of different arts are absolutely necessary in order to reach our audience and lead it along the path of its emotional growth.
This is also the main theme of this course. Why? And we will ask this question the way children do, after every answer with a new "why".
Its aim: to awaken the creative essence of the actor and turn it into the main driving force in the creation of stage dramaturgy. To analyse passivity and activity, to motivate active creation using improvisation, always keeping to the main line of the character’s motivation.
What it consists of: Creating a character by form and behaviour from a freely chosen object or material, a character that has a main goal and seeks a way to achieve it by all the means and situations offered, interacting with other characters on the basis of controlled and mastered improvisation.
Order of realisation:
1. Choosing a problem that concerns the participants and that will become the main theme of the course. Analysis.
2. Each participant creates a character from a freely chosen material or object, finding its form. Mastering the movements and its possible functions and transformations.
3. Proceeding from its form, determining its main goal and motives. (what do I want and why?)
4. Actions and interactions with other characters on the basis of improvisations in set situations.
