The Dance of Delhi (2010) is a theatrical text in seven parts, in which the same people meet in the same place – a hospital visitors’ room. These are seven stories about the witnesses of a dance born from the pain of the world. A dance that should not be watched, but listened to.
In each of these stories someone loses a loved one, but to their own surprise feels nothing. After every movement, after every action, we understand: pain does not exist. It is a reflection, a game of the mind, the shadows of clouds upon water. Death does not destroy, because, as Socrates says, it is a sleep without dreams. What remains is the only reality: love – not as a feeling, but as an essence, as the pulse of the universe.
Each character explores their identity – not as something stable, but as an illusion, a disintegrating mask that never reaches the essence. The roles change, the lines repeat, but they remain empty – until they touch love.
The Dance of Delhi is a great tale of love, death and transformation. A puzzle-story, „read“ from seven different angles.
But this dance is not a tragedy – it is an existential comedy, in which the paradoxes of time bend to the point of absurdity. The laughter comes not in spite of the pain, but because of its dissolving. When you realise that there is nothing to hope for, that nothing has to happen in a particular way, then at last you can truly laugh. And in this laughter, in this game, in this dance, you are free.
This is honest theatre – not a pathetic celebration of suffering, but liberation through laughter. A theatre in which there are no false tears and heavy gestures, but only dialogue that turns into movement, movement that turns into dance.
Ivan Vyrypaev, born in 1974 in Irkutsk and currently living in Poland, is one of the five most-staged contemporary playwrights in Europe. The founder of Teatr.doc, he is among the leading figures of the new experimental wave in Russian drama. For him, theatre does not need false pathos, but honest conversation.
„We are moving towards a new kind of communication“ – says Vyrypaev. „I would call it communication between energies and consciousnesses. The viewer comes to the theatre because they need dialogue, living feedback…“
And when we understand this, when we stop being afraid, expecting, clinging, then we can laugh – because we are free.
